From the National Weather Service: BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL COMBINE WITH NORTHWEST WINDS TO PRODUCE DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS OF 25 BELOW TO 40 BELOW ZERO THIS MORNING. FOR A BRIEF TIME THIS AFTERNOON... WIND CHILLS OF 20 BELOW TO 30 BELOW ARE POSSIBLE BUT ARE EXPECTED TO FALL BACK TO 25 BELOW TO 40 BELOW TONIGHT. SOME IMPROVEMENTS ARE POSSIBLE FRIDAY AFTERNOON AS AIR TEMPERATURES BEGIN TO WARM INTO THE POSITIVE SINGLE DIGITS ABOVE ZERO.
A WIND CHILL WARNING MEANS THE COMBINATION OF WIND AND VERY COLD AIR WILL CREATE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA OR DEATH IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN....Issued 3:46 am CST, Thu., Jan. 15, 2009

Get excited for Kuvia!
Join us on January 12th to 16th for Kuviasungnerk/Kangeiko, a University of
Chicago tradition held annually since 1983! The tradition originated
from Sociology professor Don Levine's proposal that the University
organize a winter festival on campus incorporating kangeiko (寒稽古), a form of
Japanese martial arts practiced by samurai during the winter to build
mental discipline and to stay healthy. Associate Dean Jean Treese
named the festival Kuviasungnerk after an Inuit word for the pursuit
of happiness. Kuvia has since expanded into a week long festival of
morning calisthenics at sunrise, faculty fireside chats, the infamous
Polar Bear Run across the quad, and much more. Stay tuned for more
information about the excting events we have planned for Kuvia!

Our Commitment to the Environment

This year we are moving to make COUP events more environmentally friendly. We have been making a conscious effort to recycle at every event and this effort will continue, hopefully becoming more efficient every time. In future events we are looking to move to using biodegradable and compostable plates, cups and flatware as our budget allows. Before we are able to make a complete switch to more environmentally friendly products, however, we must first use up all previously purchased decorations, plates, cups, and utensils, so we appreciate your patience during this transition.
Our first completely Green event will be Fall Formal, which is going to take place at the first building to go green in Chicago—The Notabaert Nature Museum. Our caterers, Blue Plate, in keeping with our efforts to go green, will also be using biodegradable products during our event. The museum also has an exhibit on how to make our lives more eco-friendly and lessen our impact on the environment.
If you have any suggestions on how else we can go green, please do not hesitate to send us an email! Check back for more updates on our progress in making COUP go green. Thank you for your attention and concern.
